After their adventures in Greed Island, Gon and Killua get reading to meet Ging, Gon’s father. However, they end up meeting Kite, a Contract Hunter one of Ging’s former students, and get caught up in his current mission - to eliminate the Chimera Ants, an invasive species of ants that grow more and more powerful depending on what the Chimera Ant Queen consumes. When the Queen begins to feed on humans, the Chimera Ants become frighteningly powerful and it’s up to the Hunter Association to stop them.Review. The Chimera Ant Arc is probably the most loved arc of HxH so far and it’s not hard to see why. It’s dark, compelling, and has some of the most epic battles of the entire series. There are a couple of cons but I think the pros of this arc far outweigh the negative aspects.

For example, this arc is pretty lengthy (it’s 60 episodes) and that’s largely in part because the events that unfold need a lot of set up. It pays off in the end but I can see why some might think it tiresome to have to sit through so much just to get to the real action. Even after the Chimera Ant Arc takes off, the story can be really dialogue heavy, typically because the narrator spends a lot of time explaining to the reader why or how something is happening. There’s actually an entire episode where only two minutes pass. It’s crazy:P However, if you can get past all of that, Chimera Ant Arc really is amazing. Kite is one of the many new characters introduced in this arc and is of great importance.

Along with the new Chimera Ants, we’re also introduced to experienced Hunters from the Hunter Association that have come to help with the Chimera Ant situation. There’s the buff-but-kind Knuckle, the timid Shoot, the slightly deranged Palm, the calm Morel, and the serious Knov. Aside from being another mentor for Gon and Killua and getting the two youngsters involved with the Chimera Ant situation, Kite also brings up new information about Ging that the audience didn’t know before. Prior to Kite, the viewers had only received about Ging from Aunt Mito and a few friends that Ging worked with to create Greed Island, like Razor and Dwun. We get a better understanding of who Ging was. Ging’s poor parenting skills are pretty questionable but it’s also just who he is as a person. Kite also helps confirm that Ging, despite abandoning Gon, really does care about his son and believes that Gon will grow up to be a great Hunter. It’s also really fantastic to see Gon and Killua working with a pro-Hunter. The only other time we saw Gon and Killua accompanied by a pro-Hunter was when they were with Bisky on Greed Island but this time they’re on official Hunter business, which I think is super cool!

Through Gon and Killua’s adventures with Kite, we get to see how cool - and dangerous - Hunter work is as well as the strength that a pro-Hunter possesses. Kite also has a really unique Nen ability, Crazy Slots, which allows him to conjure a random weapon for combat. (For more information on this ability and many more, I highly recommend you check out ’s Nen Ability series!). Once the Chimera Ants become the most powerful they’ve ever been, they begin to prey on human villages and things get even more worse when they discover just how powerful they can become when they consume “special humans” - Hunters that have the ability to use Nen. Even worse, the Chimera Ants themselves learn that they can now wield Nen. (The discovery itself is a little weird to me. Is that how pores work?

Maybe Chimera Ants are different.) Thus, the Hunter Association must be called in to deal with the Chimera Ants before the invasive species wipes out all of humanity. Are the Chimera Ants incredibly overpowered? Yeah, but I’ve been waiting for Gon and company to face a challenge and the last time his group had faced enemies this dangerous was back in Yorknew City, so I welcomed these deadly antagonists with open arms. It’s exciting to watch Gon, Killua, and the rest of the Hunter Association go up against such ruthless creatures. What’s even more surprising, however, is how fleshed out the Chimera Ants were. Because the Chimera Ants have hidden memories of their human past deep down in the back of their mind, they are now more than just animals seeking food. They have dreams and desires, which I found really fascinating.

The Royal Guards are perhaps the greatest example of this. The Royal Guards are three Chimera Ants that are born specifically to protect the Queen and, after the King is born, solely listen to the King and follow him to create a new colony of Chimera Ants. We’re introduced to Neferpitou, Shaiapouf, and Menthuthuyoupi (or Youpi for short), who are the most powerful Chimera Ants next to Meruem, the King. Although they’re all very loyal to the King, they all express their devotion to him in different ways and have different opinions on how best to serve the King. Neferpitou cares about the King and takes his feelings into account, so she also makes sure to protect Komugi, a human that the King cares about very much. Shaiapouf, however, will override any concern about the King’s desires if he believes that something else will benefit the King.

It’s clear that he cares about the King, an obsessive sort of love and devotion, but Shaiapouf is more selfish and will find ways sneakily do what he thinks is best for Meruem whether Meruem wants it or not. Youpi is probably the most different from Neferpitou and Shaiapouf because he’s far more straightforward about carrying out the King’s orders, probably because he is the least human of the three and therefore relies more on his instincts.

Thus, he’s able to fully devote himself to the King. It was very fascinating to see how they operated and there’s amazing growth (or digression if you’re looking at Shaiapouf) as you watch them evolve from predators to multi-faceted characters. We’re gifted with quite a colorful cast and all of them add so much to this arc.

Knuckle, although initially an opponent for Gon to see which one of them would be chosen to help exterminate the Chimera Ants, later becomes an ally and a bit of a mentor to Gon, pointing out flaws in his fighting techniques and especially his Hatsu. I also really loved seeing Knuckle’s relationship with his mentor Morel since HxH has only explored Gon’s experience with teachers. It was refreshing to see how the student-teacher relationship differed for different people. The antics with Palm were also really funny as well, especially the whole date that Gon went on with her xD Seeing all of these different Hunters take on such a tough mission and display a variety of Nen was absolutely brilliant. Although I’m not typically fond of large casts, having so many characters and showing how facing the Chimera Ants affected them, whether breaking them down mentally or helping them find a new drive, was fantastic and showed just how perilous the Chimera Ant mission was. The Phantom Troupe also makes a cameo during this arc. While it’s easy to see the Phantom Troupe as bad guys, their role during the Chimera Ant Arc shows that they have another side to them.

When Meteor City, the home of many Troupe members, is threatened by the Chimera Ants, the Troupe sets out to eradicate the invasive species and keep their home safe. HxH then blesses us by allowing the Troupe to battle against the Chimera Ants and display powers that they might not have been able to demonstrate back in the Yorknew City Arc. We also get to see Kalluto, who is introduced as Hisoka’s replacement during the Greed Island Arc, and see just exactly what he’s made of.

There’s also a little more insight on how the Phantom Troupe operates. Despite functioning as a group, they tend to take turns when battling dangerous opponents and don’t jump in to help when a member is having difficulty with an opponent. This is also shown during the Yorknew City Arc when Uvogin fights against the Shadow Beasts alone. I always found their battle strategy to be pretty intriguing but also really fitting for the Phantom Troupe.

It’s a little bit like a competition to see who can fight the strongest foe. No Hisoka here but, hey, I can’t have everything. My head probably would have exploded from all of the awesome if he was included so maybe it’s a good thing:P.

Hxh Chimera Ant Characters

Meruem’s development is one of the many things that gets praised a lot when people speak of the Chimera Ant Arc and it’s well-deserved. Initially a cold-hearted and ruthless ruler, he later grows to care for a human and questions the differences between Ants and humans. He’s also a wonderful antagonist to watch. Aside from being incredibly strong, he’s also very good at picking up skills and knowledge at an astonishing rate. Because he was born King, Meruem believed that he was superior to all beings and thus treated everyone else as lesser beings.

Enter Komugi, a blind girl with snot dripping from her nose and World Gungi Champion, who is introduced to the King as an opponent so that he can test his abilities at the boardgame. Even though Komugi is a World Champion, she still refers to herself as “garbage” and believes that her only value is her ability to play Gungi, vowing to take her life if she ever loses. After being influenced by her humble nature, Meruem develops feelings for her and also changes how he sees himself. The character development for Meruem was marvelously done and his relationship with Komugi is sure to warm even the coldest of hearts. Gon’s character also shows a lot of growth during the Chimera Ant Arc and the poor kid probably goes through some of the darkest moments of his life. We’ve seen Gon at some of his best times - getting his Hunter’s license, reuniting Killua, finally being able to punch Hisoka in the face, winning Greed Island - and now we get to see him lower than we’ve ever seen him go before.

Did I ever expect him to be perfect? But the level of darkness that Gon sinks to is quite surprising and even painful to watch. Chimera Ant is definitely HxH’s darkest arc to date. Killua also gets a lot of time to grow and the series finally addresses the issue of his upbringing as an assassin. Although being brought up as a killer has made Killua a formidable opponent, it has also given him a large weakness that has been subtly hinted at during previous arcs.

Although quite strong already, there are still people stronger than him and Killua has been conditioned to escape if he’s ever faced with an adversary more powerful than him. That mentality has been burned into his mind so much that Killua is likely to abandon Gon if he has to. Thus, he’s troubled with the belief that he doesn’t deserve to be Gon’s friend. Although my sister thought that the way that Killua overcame his weakness was rather cheap, I was pretty okay with it and loved the vast difference between Killua before and after he conquered that mentality.

(He also develops more of his electrical Nen abilities, which is rad as hell.). As expected, there are some really fantastically directed battle scenes with great build up.

Whether it’s the art direction, the music, or the actual fight, I enjoyed seeing everything go down. I disliked how the narrator would cut in with some lengthy dialogue, sometimes to explain powers or to give the audience some backstory, but he did give us crucial information so I can’t really fault him for that xD What’s amazing about the Chimera Ant Arc is that it somehow makes everything, from the confrontation to the actual fight, compelling and it watching the latter half of this arc kept me at the edge of my seat. The battles are truly epic and also highlight how powerful everyone involved is. This arc was wonderfully done and a fantastic watch.

With the exception of the slow build up and perhaps a few loose ends (which I’m personally okay with because HxH is ongoing and those issues still have a chance at being resolved later), I found the Chimera Ant Arc to be a truly compelling arc and see why the fandom regards it as the best HxH so far. Although it’s a lengthy 60 episodes (a good chunk of the entire HxH series), the slow beginning is totally worth it. All of the main players involved go through such massive growth and Meruem’s transformation, from a ruthless ruler who took everything he wanted to someone who questioned his true nature, is definitely one of the highlights of the HxH series.

This arc has a handful of episodes that are just perfectly executed. I’ve watched it a while ago but my heart still pounds erratically whenever I recall all of those fights, especially Netero and Meruem’s and Gon and Neferpitou’s. No matter how much anime I watch, I’m sure that I’ll always regard HxH’s Chimera Ant Arc with awe.
